Below are all the activities that were carried out by Sectoral Collaborative Platform (SCP) MARE-IGM from 2021 until 2023.
3rd National Workshop on Coastal and Marine Geology 2021

Summary
The 3rd National Marine Geology and Coastal Workshop was held on 30th August 2021. This event was an annual event for Coastal and Marine Geology Working Group - Institute of Geology Malaysia (IGM) with collaboration with Geological Society of Malaysia (GSM) and managed by Academy GEX as the event organizer. This event was initially proposed by Mr Abdullah Sulaiman as the chairman of the working group committee. This year, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has been selected to become the host of this event with support from the UTP - MARE ERASMUS team lead by Professor Ir Dr Shaharin Anwar B Sulaiman.

This event has become the annual platform for various stakeholders to share and discuss their finding related to the marine and coastal area development. The event theme for this year was “Towards sustainable coastal and Marine management”. This event was officiated by Mr Nizam Hassan (President of GSM) and later was continue with the 3 separate session which focusing on 3 different subtopic which are session 1 - coastal & marine development from geological perspective; session 2 - coastal issues, protection, and adaption; session 3 - coastal resources & sustainable management. Panel discussion towards the closing session have bring new ideas and perspective on the current and unsolved issues that lingers around the community revolving the importance of the sustainability development of the coastal area.

Session speakers were comprised of various professional from academics, industry, and the policy maker. The speakers for this year including researchers from academic and research institute, government officer and industry players. Participant were comprise of representative from the governmental agencies, undergraduates and postgraduates students from higher learning institution, private companies and non-governmental organization. The closing remarks were given later by Mr Abd Rasid Japar (President of IGM). This one-day webinar successfully gathers 171 participants not including the moderator and also the speakers.
Coastal Malaysian Institution Virtual Colloquium Series 04/2021
On 30th December 2021, Coastal Malaysian Institution Colloquium was conducted. This event was organized by University Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), represented by Mr. Mohamad Shaufi (IGM comm), International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT).

TITLE: Domestic Seabed Mining Law in Malaysia: What, Why and How?

Summary
On 9th March 2022, the Institute Geology of Malaysia with Academy GEX as Event Coordinator conducted the Deep Seabed Mining Seminar: Perspectives from a Developing Nations which focused on on the perspectives from a developing nation to participate with the deep seabed mining. The prestige event was chaired by Dr. Khaira Ismail and Mr. Abdullah Sulaiman as the advisor of this event. The online seminar is well supported by the KeTSA, Geological Society of Malaysia, Malaysia Chamber of Mine, Erasmus+, MARE., MyOcean Hope, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.

The seminar was open to the public and approximately 80 were in attendance. During the seminar, the attendees listened and asked question to the speakers as well as giving opinions and thoughts about the Deep Seabed Mining. As mentioned in the list above, the event invited well known speakers in this field.

The seminar was started with the Mr. Abdul Rasid Jaapar, the President of Institute of Geology Malaysia to give the welcoming speech and the opening ceremony by the President of Malaysian Chamber of Mine, Dato’ Seri Mohd Ajib Bin Anuar. The seminar was officially started with the session from the Keynote Speakers Dr. Khaira Ismail and Dr. Mazlan where they discussed about The Geological Settings of Deep Seabed Minerals and The Potential of deep Seabed Mining for Malaysia respectively.

It was then continued with Dr. Kirsty McQuaid to present the title The Ecology of Deep-Sea Environments of Interest for Seabed Mining, Mr. Pradeep Arjan Singh with the title Regulation of Deep Seabed Mining on The International Seabed, Mr. Abdullah Sulaiman presented A Domestic Seabed Mining Law in Malaysia: What, Why and How? and Dr. Thet Tin Nyunt presented Seafloor Exploration in Myanmar Coastal Area.

The evening session started with Mr. Bebeb A.K.N Djundjunan delivering his presentation with a title Indonesia and Deep Seabed Mining. The seminar had a great participation throughout the day as the attendees were sharing their thoughts and opinions especially during Panel discussion where the panelist discussed about the Enhancing participation of Developing Nations in Regulating Deep Seabed Mining. This seminar was well received and well participated as this program is fresh where everyone wanted to know the direction of deep seabed mining in our country as well as the other developing nations. Other than participation from our country, we received the interest from our neighbour country, Indonesia as well.
The fruitful event ended with the closing remarks by Dato’ Zakaria Mohamad, the Chairman of Board of Geologist Malaysia.
Engagement with IGM
On November 2022, there were briefing on MARE collaboration with IGM to new IGM Technical Chair of Committee on Coastal & Marine Geology and also engagement with IGM during meeting at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT).
